About this course
Welcome to the Research Methodologies course! This foundational course is an integral part of the Master’s program. Besides, it is intended to support dissertations or research projects in your Bachelor’s or Master’s Programme. Supporting the work you must complete at the end of a program or course is also crucial. It is made to give you the fundamental know-how and abilities required to succeed in academic research. Whether you’re planning to pursue a career in academia, business, or any field involving critical analysis and problem-solving, this course will provide the tools to conduct rigorous and impactful research.
Expected learning outcomes
Your understanding of the course material will be assessed through various methods, including assignments, quizzes and a research project. These assessments are designed to evaluate your comprehension and practical application of research methodologies, preparing you for successful research endeavours.
Indicative Syllabus
LO1 – Understand what qualitative research is
LO2 – Understand what quantitative research is
LO3 – To know some of the main types of qualitative research in the context of Social Sciences: Action Research, Case Study, Design Science Research, and others
LO4 – Be able to plan a research project
LO5 – Collect and analyse data using the appropriate collection and analysis tools
LO6 – Organise a literature review
LO7 – Prepare and write a state-of-the-art
LO8 – Apply bibliographic standards: in citations, bibliographic references, footnotes, etc
LO9 – Manage, in an automated way, a list of references in a document
LO10 – Write scientific articles, book chapters, reports, posters, monographs, and theses
LO11 – Apply Ethical Research Practices
LO12 – Understand the process of submitting scientific papers to scientific journals, conferences and other scientific communication channels
Teaching / Learning Methodology
Expositive, demonstrative, and active methodologies will be applied based on the theoretical explanation, practical demonstration and development of individual and group activities. It is also planned to use Case Studies as a methodology for acquiring analytical skills, as a way to improve critical thinking and to ameliorate synthesis and communication skills. We believe in an interactive and engaging learning environment. The course will include a mix of lectures, class discussions, group activities, and practical exercises. You’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with your peers, fostering a supportive atmosphere for knowledge sharing and teamwork.
